This used to be a <link> to fonts.googleapis.com. That put TWO third-party
origins on the critical path — googleapis for the CSS, then gstatic for the
files it named — and neither could start until the one before it finished. A
DNS lookup plus a TLS handshake, twice, before any text could render.

Served from our own origin the whole chain disappears: the browser is already
connected, and the @font-face below names the file directly rather than
pointing at a stylesheet that points at a file.

ONE VARIABLE FONT, not four static weights. Google's default answer is a file
per weight — 400, 500, 600 and 700 were four separate requests. The variable
cut carries the whole 400..700 axis in a single 30KB file, which is both fewer
round trips and strictly more type: app.css asks for `font-weight: 650` in two
places, and with static weights the browser had no 650 to give and synthesised
one. Now it is a real instance.

The unicode-range split is kept exactly as Google served it. It is what stops
a page of English pulling the 11KB latin-ext file it will never draw from.

Instrument Sans is licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits
self-hosting. Files are the woff2 cuts from Google Fonts v4.
